Innovega Smart Glasses FAQ

About Innovega Smart Glasses

About the Glasses

Innovega's smart glasses represent a new category of vision technology. A discreet camera captures the world in real time and projects it onto an invisible display that appears to float in front of your eyes, providing advanced features like zoom, brightness, and contrast control. Unlike bulky headsets, this system allows users to see both the display and their natural surroundings at the same time, preserving mobility, dignity, and social connection.

  • Gen I Smart Glasses
Designed for people living with severe central vision loss caused by conditions such as Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), Stargardt's Disease, Diabetic Retinopathy, and Retinitis Pigmentosa. Gen I focuses on restoring functional sight to improve reading, face recognition, and independent mobility.
  • Gen II Smart Glasses & Contact Lenses
Gen II pairs our smart glasses with Innovega's patented soft contact lens, unlocking a wider field of view and even greater performance. These glasses deliver immersive display technology with advanced features like zoom, brightness, contrast, and AI-powered enhancements. Gen II is also designed as a platform for future consumer applications including productivity, entertainment, and augmented reality.

Unlike bulky headsets or goggles, Innovega glasses look like normal eyewear. They provide a much wider field of view, can be worn all day, and are discreet with no isolating stigma. Patients describe them as life-changing because they give independence without making you feel like you're wearing a device.

The glasses themselves do not require FDA approval. The lenses are regulated medical devices and will go through the FDA process. Clinical trials at The Ohio State University already showed participants using Innovega's Gen II system improved on average to near 20/20 functional vision.

Medical Eligibility

Best results are seen in central retinal diseases, including:
  • Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD/ARMD)
  • Stargardt's Disease
  • Diabetic Retinopathy (with central vision loss)
  • Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) — if central vision remains

If the optic nerve is completely non-functional (no light perception), unfortunately the glasses cannot help. But if there is partial function, there may still be hope. Conditions like optic nerve atrophy, NAION, or glaucoma are case-dependent.

No. If there is no light perception at all, the system will not work.

Best results are seen in central retinal diseases, including:

  • ROP (Retinopathy of Prematurity): May help depending on severity.
  • Nystagmus: Possible, but depends on stability of eye movements.
  • Visual Snow Syndrome: Unlikely to benefit.
  • Steven Johnson Syndrome / ocular surface damage: Not typically effective.
  • High Myopia (extreme nearsightedness): May benefit.

Some test patients have reported regaining enough clarity to resume driving. Eligibility depends on your condition, residual vision, and local laws. Please consult your physician and licensing authority.

Yes. This is not a concept or future vision. It's real technology, clinically validated in trials at Ohio State University's College of Optometry, proving the technology can restore functional vision. Patients have read, recognized faces, and even reported have the confidence to drive again during demos.

Over 295 million people worldwide live with moderate-to-severe vision impairment. In the U.S. alone, 20 million struggle with conditions like macular degeneration. This is a $50B+ market that no one else has addressed with a discreet, everyday wearable.

Innovega is led by industry veterans, including CEO Steve Willey, who founded and took two startups public, and CTO Arthur Zhang, former systems architect of Apple's Vision Pro.
